The world of wood working has been an evolutionary process for Ray Luckhaupt. He began with furniture and cabinet building, then proceeding to making "Objects of Art".  It requires immense skill with the tools necessary, such as the Lathe,  to make these beautiful pieces. The art pieces he creates are made from either a single block or segments of wood into rings which are then stacked to become a vessel. This vessel is then mounted on the lathe and turned to its final shape. Because individual segments are used, many different species of wood can be used creating some very interesting patterns. He has had as many as 36 different species of wood in my shop at one time both exotic and domestic woods. The individual beauty of the piece of wood selected determines much of the result. The color, grain pattern and"figure" in the wood differs widely and the skill of the turner to display the beauty of the wood is sometimes accidental as well as intended. That's the fun of it. He loves doing what he does and while he has slowed a bit do to the process of aging, he is continuing with his practice as long as he can.
